Sega cancels super game project after seeing live-service games underperforming

TOKYO: The Super Game which was going to launch its latest version of the live stream game, announced cancelling the project, citing unexpected loss in the revenue earnings.

The company which was launched in 2021 had said previously that it was “aimed at online and global markets” and that it would be a combination of multiple projects.

SEGA also described “Sega Games” as an initiative aimed at building a large-scale global “AAA + online ecosystem,” serving as an umbrella for multiple projects within a long-term strategic plan.

Regarding some of the projects, the company’s Executive Vice President Shuji Utsumi also revealed a few details about it, earlier. He revealed at a point that multiple titles were being developed as part of its Super Game project. Seeing fans interest, he had also added that this supposed Super Game would go “beyond the framework of conventional games.”

Following the SEGA latest announcement, the company said that its free-to-play and live-service games were underperforming. “The company decided the strategy wasn’t working financially”.

It shifted focus back to traditional “premium” single-player games. They also moved staff away from F2P development into main franchise projects.
