Sindh governor orders probe into alarming failure rates among Karachi students


Sindh governor shocked at high failing rates of Karachi students

KARACHI: Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori has ordered an investigation into the alarming failure rate of students in Karachi, where two-thirds of the students alledgely failed their exams.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Tessori said that the dismal performance of students in Karachi reflects the poor state of education in Sindh. He said that he was shocked to learn that 66 per cent of students in Karachi do not pass their exams.

He said that he had met with the representatives of the parents’ federation and the local education board to discuss the issue and find solutions. He also said that he has directed the Karachi commissioner to submit a report on the causes of the high failure rate within 10 days.

Tessori assured that the inquiry will be fair and impartial and that the government will take necessary steps to improve the quality of education in Sindh.

Sindh is one of the most backward provinces in terms of education in Pakistan. The literacy rate of Sindh is only 58 per cent, compared to the national average of 70 per cent. The female literacy rate of Sindh is even lower at 46 per cent.

The province also faces a severe shortage of schools, infrastructure, and teachers.

According to a report by Alif Ailaan, a non-governmental organization working for education, 54 per cent of the children in Sindh drop out of school before completing primary education. About 20 per cent of the children in Sindh have never attended school at any level.

Experts say that the low quality of education, lack of accountability, corruption, and political interference are some of the factors that contribute to the poor educational outcomes in Sindh.

They urge the government to invest more in education, reform the curriculum, train the teachers, and monitor the schools to ensure better learning for the students.
