Sirajul Haq announces to move SC against IPP agreements

LAHORE: Jamaat-e-Islami chief Sirajul Haq has announced to challenge in the Supreme Court the agreements with independent power producers (IPPs).

Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, he highlighted the concerns raised by the public during peaceful protests on Saturday.

He stated that the people expressed their refusal to accept the International Monetary Fund (IMF) agreements, citing the high cost of electricity in Pakistan despite the country having five rivers and the government’s plan to increase electricity rates to Rs90 per unit.

Haq emphasised that they would approach the Supreme Court to contest the IPP agreements.

He asserted that the burden on the common citizens was steadily increasing, and Pakistan had been pushed into darkness through artificial agreements and conspiracies aimed at hindering its progress, including obstacles to the construction of dams.

Expressing his disappointment, the JI questioned the caretaker prime minister’s dismissal of inflation and electricity bills as non-issues.

He pointed out that not even a month had passed since the increase in petrol prices, yet another price hike was carried out with continuous price hikes expected in the future.

He further declared that he would question the prime minister why the government was purchasing expensive electricity when it was evident that the authorities had lost control, and all economic indicators were deteriorating.

Haq also said that there is a petroleum mafia in Pakistan and they collaborate to loot and exploit the public.
