Steven Tyler has spent decades fronting one of rock music’s biggest bands, but in recent years, questions around the Aerosmith singer’s health have overshadowed his future on stage.
A serious vocal injury ultimately forced Aerosmith to retire from touring, though a rare performance and fresh comments from a bandmate have left some fans wondering whether the story is truly over.
In September 2023, Aerosmith postponed dates on its Peace Out farewell tour after Tyler suffered vocal cord damage. At the time, the band said doctors had advised the singer not to perform for at least 30 days while he focused on recovery.
Weeks later, Aerosmith revealed the issue was more severe than first thought. Tyler had suffered a fractured larynx in addition to vocal cord damage, forcing the band to delay its farewell plans further.
“Unfortunately, Steven’s vocal injury is more serious than initially thought,” Aerosmith said in a statement to fans at the time.
Despite months of treatment, the setback eventually led to a heartbreaking decision.
In August 2024, Aerosmith confirmed it was retiring from touring, explaining that Tyler’s voice had not recovered enough for the demands of live performances.
“Sadly, it is clear that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible,” the band said when announcing the move.
The decision marked the end of an era for the band behind hits including ‘Dream On’, ‘Walk This Way’, ‘Crazy’ and ‘I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing’.
Tyler has made only limited public performances since Aerosmith retired from touring. In February 2025, he returned to the stage for a short set during his Jam for Janie Grammy Awards viewing party in Los Angeles, offering fans a rare glimpse of the singer after his health setback.
For now, Aerosmith remains retired from touring, marking the end of an era for one of rock music’s most influential bands.
