WEB DESK: Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye found the back of the net as Switzerland cruised into the World Cup round of 16 with a clinical 2-0 victory over Algeria at the BC Place stadium on Thursday night.
The triumph marked the fourth consecutive time the Swiss have reached the knockout stages of the global showpiece. Murat Yakin’s men will now remain in Vancouver to face either Colombia or Ghana on Tuesday, as they look to secure their first World Cup quarter-final appearance since 1954.
Early dominance and Embolo’s opener
Switzerland asserted their authority early in the contest, breaking the deadlock in the 10th minute courtesy of a brilliant piece of individual skill from Johan Manzambi. The winger embarked on a dazzling run down the flank, cutting all the way to the goal line before delivering a precise cutback to the awaiting Embolo. The striker made no mistake, lunging forward to tap the ball home with his left leg from close range.
Algeria struggled to cope with the European side’s intensity and could have fallen further behind in the 37th minute. A well-delivered free-kick found Denis Zakaria inside the penalty area, but the midfielder’s header sailed high and wide of the right post, letting the North Africans off the hook before the interval.
Ndoye capitalises on defensive blunder
Any hopes of an Algerian comeback were swiftly dashed merely a minute into the second half. A poor clearance attempt by Algerian defender Rafik Belghali fell directly into the path of Ndoye. The Swiss forward capitalised immediately, unleashing a sharp, right-footed strike that flew past goalkeeper Luca Zidane and nestled into the bottom-left corner of the net.
The second goal effectively took the sting out of the Desert Foxes, who found it increasingly difficult to puncture the disciplined Swiss rearguard. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel had a relatively quiet evening, making just two saves to maintain his clean sheet.
Switzerland squandered a golden opportunity to add gloss to the scoreline in the 81st minute. Zakaria’s low cross evaded a sliding Embolo to find an unmarked Fabian Rieder at the far post. With the goal gaping, Rieder could only offer a tame contact with his heel, allowing a scrambling Zidane to recover and smother the ball.
Algeria thought they had carved out a rare opportunity in the 88th minute when Anis Hadj Moussa tested Kobel with a curling left-footed effort from distance. Though the Swiss custodian parried it away, the linesman’s flag was already raised for offside.
In a match where Switzerland outshot their opponents 11-8 and dominated the shots-on-target count 5-2, the European outfit comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to seal their progression in style.
