Tragedy in South Waziristan: four children killed in drone strike

Gunmen attack police guarding polio workers in Hangu; one cop martyred, four injured

PESHAWAR: A wave of grief has swept through the Ghwa Khwa region in district Hangu in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa following a series of drone strikes on Thursday that resulted in the deaths of four children from the same family.

Local sources report that multiple missiles were launched at the area, purportedly targeting “suspicious vehicles” and militant activity, but the kinetic action instead exacted a devastating toll on the local civilian population, according to The Nation.

Civilian casualties and infrastructure damage

The strikes, which residents say targeted a vehicle that was subsequently obliterated, caused extensive collateral damage to nearby residential properties.

The four young victims, who were reportedly part of the same household, were martyred instantly, while several others sustained varying degrees of injury. Witnesses described a scene of absolute chaos, with the sound of the explosions reverberating for miles, sparking widespread panic.

In a separate but equally harrowing incident in Hangu, a mortar shell landed in a busy market near a petrol pump in Dorri Banda during a crossfire, killing four people and injuring 12 others.

The injured from both regions have been rushed to local hospitals, with the most critical cases transferred to Peshawar for specialist care.

A community under siege

The repeated occurrence of such strikes in densely populated areas has sparked significant outrage among the inhabitants of South Waziristan and Wana.

Local elders and eyewitnesses have pointed out that while militants often manage to evade these attacks by taking shelter, it is the ordinary residents particularly children who bear the brunt of the violence.

“Our children cannot even play outdoors without being at risk,” one resident lamented. Following the dual tragedies in Ghwa Khwa and Hangu, the local community has called upon the authorities to prioritise the protection of civilian life and property.

As security forces tighten their cordons and continue operations in areas such as Zargari, the people of the region remain desperate for an end to the decades of unrest and a meaningful transition toward lasting peace.
