WASHINGTON: US president Donald Trump has said he intends to “permanently open” the Strait of Hormuz, suggesting cooperation with China to ease regional tensions.
In a post shared on social media on April 15, Trump claimed that China was “very happy” with the move and said the initiative would benefit both Beijing and the wider world. He added that the situation in the vital shipping lane “will never happen again.”
Trump further stated that China had agreed not to send weapons to Iran, though he did not provide details or evidence to support the claim.
Referring to Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump said the two leaders would meet in the coming weeks and emphasized what he described as strong cooperation between the two sides.
“We are working together smartly, and very well,” he wrote, while also stressing U.S. military strength, adding that the country remains “very good at fighting” if necessary.
The remarks come amid ongoing global concerns over stability in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for international oil shipments, though no official confirmation of such an agreement has been issued by Chinese or Iranian authorities.
