WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said on Friday that the Strait of Hormuz is “completely open and ready for business and full passage,” while stating that a naval blockade targeting Iran would remain in force until a broader transaction with Tehran is completed.
In a social media post, Trump said the restrictions would continue “in full force and effect as it pertains to Iran only,” adding that the process toward an agreement with Tehran was expected to move quickly as “most of the points are already negotiated.”
He did not provide details on the nature of the reported naval blockade or the scope of any U.S.-Iran transaction.
“The Strait of Hormuz is completely open and ready for business and full passage,” Trump wrote. “But the naval blockade will remain in full force and effect as it pertains to Iran, only, until such time as our transaction with Iran is 100% complete.”
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, has been at the centre of heightened regional tensions and concerns over energy supply disruptions in recent weeks.
Trump also suggested that negotiations with Iran were nearing completion, though he gave no timeline and did not specify which issues had already been agreed.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump’s statement, and there was no immediate reaction from Iranian officials.
The announcement comes amid volatile geopolitical conditions in the Gulf region, where shipping routes and energy markets remain highly sensitive to any perceived escalation or easing of tensions.
Trump has frequently used social media to issue major foreign policy statements, often without providing operational details or formal policy clarification from the administration.
