Two arrested after newborn’s body left at Lahore hospital

LAHORE: Lahore police have arrested two suspects, including a woman, in connection with the abandonment of a newborn whose body was found at a children’s hospital, officials said on Tuesday.

The incident occurred at the Children’s Hospital in the Naseerabad area, where unidentified individuals left the infant in the emergency ward and fled on April 21, according to police.

Investigators said the arrests were made after reviewing CCTV footage and using modern tracing techniques.

A special team was formed under the supervision of SP Model Town Asad Ali and SDPO Garden Town to track down those involved.

“The suspects were identified through CCTV footage, which showed them leaving the baby in the emergency ward before escaping,” Asad Ali said.

Police said the two arrested suspects — identified as Amina Bibi and Allah Wasaya — were originally from Rahim Yar Khan district and had been working near Lahore’s Hafeez Centre area.

Further investigation is underway, while police are conducting raids to apprehend a third suspect, identified as Sana, who remains at large.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of death of the newborn, which is expected to be determined through a post-mortem examination.

Senior police officials said the case was being pursued on priority, while Asad Ali praised the investigative team for swiftly tracing and arresting the suspects, announcing commendation certificates for the officers involved.

Cases involving the abandonment of newborns periodically surface in Pakistan, raising concerns among rights groups about social pressures and gaps in maternal and child welfare support systems.
