WEB DESK: The United Arab Emirates has emphasised the importance of safeguarding maritime corridors and ensuring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz during a telephone conversation between its foreign minister and his Iranian counterpart.

Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan stressed these points in a call with Abbas Araqchi, marking one of the few publicly acknowledged high-level contacts between the two nations since the recent escalation involving US and Israeli strikes on Iran and subsequent Iranian responses across the Gulf.

Diplomatic outreach after conflict

The discussion, reported by the UAE state news agency WAM on Friday, highlighted the need for full adherence to a US-Iran memorandum of understanding aimed at securing an immediate and comprehensive cessation of hostilities.

Sheikh Abdullah also underscored respect for sovereignty, compliance with international law, and the uninterrupted flow of maritime traffic in the strategic waterway.

This exchange comes against the backdrop of heightened strains in UAE-Iran relations triggered by the conflict.

Iranian attacks reportedly disrupted operations in Dubai’s hospitality sector, led to the departure of some expatriates, and challenged the emirate’s image as a stable regional business hub that hosts significant US military presence.

Hope for stability through diplomacy

Sheikh Abdullah described diplomacy as the most effective means to resolve ongoing crises, expressing optimism that current efforts would foster lasting security and stability across the region, according to WAM.

The call signals a potential de-escalation in bilateral ties, as both countries navigate the broader implications of the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran and its repercussions on Gulf security and global energy routes.
