UK and Ukraine strike deal to export drone technology

Britain and Ukraine have struck a new agreement to jointly develop and export drone technology, marking a significant step in expanding their defence cooperation and tapping into global markets.

The deal was finalised during a visit to London by Volodymyr Zelenskyy, where he met with Keir Starmer. The partnership aims to combine Ukraine’s battlefield-tested drone expertise with the UK’s industrial capacity to scale up production and supply advanced systems to international partners.

Under the agreement, both countries will work together to market drone and counter-drone technologies abroad, particularly to regions facing increasing security threats. British officials highlighted opportunities to support Gulf nations that have come under repeated attacks involving Iranian-made drones.

Ukraine, now widely regarded as a global leader in drone warfare after years of conflict with Russia, will play a central role in the collaboration. Zelenskyy noted that Ukrainian specialists are already deployed in parts of the Middle East at the request of allies, including the United States, and that Kyiv is open to expanding such cooperation further.

The agreement also includes a broader military-industrial partnership focused on boosting drone production and integrating artificial intelligence into battlefield operations. A new AI centre in Ukraine, supported by a £500,000 UK investment, will explore how emerging technologies can enhance combat effectiveness.

The initiative comes as European leaders seek to maintain strong support for Ukraine despite global attention shifting toward rising tensions in the Middle East. Mark Rutte joined discussions in London, emphasising the importance of strengthening Euro-Atlantic security through innovation and cooperation.

Beyond exports, the UK and Ukraine are also exploring collaboration with third countries and working alongside partners such as Finland and the Netherlands to develop joint defence financing mechanisms aimed at accelerating investment and increasing the availability of military equipment.

The deal underscores a strategic shift: turning Ukraine’s wartime technological advances into a global defence asset, while reinforcing long-term support from one of its closest allies.
