The United States has launched a new military-supported initiative aimed at safeguarding commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy transit routes.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that its forces began supporting “Project Freedom” on May 4, following direction from the president. The mission is designed to ensure that merchant vessels can move through the strategic waterway without disruption.
The Strait of Hormuz carries roughly a quarter of global seaborne oil shipments, along with significant quantities of fuel and fertilizer, making its security vital to the global economy.
CENTCOM Commander Adm Brad Cooper described the effort as a defensive operation intended to reinforce regional stability while maintaining existing naval measures in the area.
The initiative comes alongside a broader diplomatic and security push led by the US State Department in coordination with international partners. This effort, known as the Maritime Freedom Construct, focuses on improving communication and cooperation to strengthen maritime security in the region.
As part of Project Freedom, the US military is deploying a substantial force that includes guided-missile destroyers, more than 100 aircraft operating across land and sea, unmanned systems, and approximately 15,000 personnel.
Officials say the combined diplomatic and military approach will be key to ensuring safe passage through the heavily trafficked corridor.
