US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said Washington believes the war with Iran is approaching a conclusion, as the conflict enters its fifth week, while also indicating that diplomatic engagement between the two sides may be on the horizon.

Speaking in a television interview, Rubio said the United States can now “see the finish line,” though he cautioned that an immediate end is not expected. He revealed that indirect communication is ongoing between Washington and Tehran, raising the possibility of a direct meeting in the future.

The conflict began on February 28 after the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iranian targets, prompting retaliatory attacks by Tehran on Israeli positions and Gulf locations hosting US bases. Since then, the fighting has spread across the region, with Israeli strikes also reported in Lebanon.

The war has resulted in significant casualties and displacement, while also disrupting global markets and driving up oil prices.

US President Donald Trump said earlier this week that American military operations could wind down within two to three weeks, though he has previously offered varying objectives for the campaign, ranging from weakening Iran’s military to broader political goals.

Rubio also dismissed the likelihood of meaningful external support for Iran affecting US operations, stating that no country is currently taking actions that would hinder Washington’s military efforts.
