Xi vows to work with Trump to steer China-US ties toward stable future

Chinese President Xi Jinping said that he was ready to work with US President Donald Trump to steer China-US relations toward a stable future as he paid his state visit to the United States.

Speaking at the White House, Xi said he is “very glad” to visit the “beautiful” United States, thanking Trump and his family for their hospitality.

He congratulated the United States on its 250th anniversary of independence and says China and the US are both great countries with great people.

Xi said his visit aims to continue friendship and expand cooperation between the two countries.

He added that China and the US, as two major countries, have a historic responsibility to advance human development and progress.

Earlier, Trump said Washington and Beijing have made “tremendous strides” on issues facing the two countries.

Trump said the two leaders will discuss security, technology and what he calls “super intelligence”, referring to artificial intelligence, according to BBC News.

Ahead of Xi’s arrival, Trump again opposed further AI regulation, saying he wanted to leave the sector “exactly where it is” and that China holds the same position.

Despite the warm welcome, disagreements are expected between the two leaders.
