NEW YORK: Angelina Jolie has teamed with her 15-year-old daughter to produce the new Broadway musical, “The Outsiders”, which officially opened on Broadway on Thursday (April 11).

Vivienne Jolie-Pitt first saw an early workshop of the production in La Jolla, California, before she encouraged her mother to join the team behind the musical and take it to Broadway.

Set in 1967 Tulsa, Oklahoma, the musical adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s coming-of-age novel charts the journey of Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade, and their Greaser family as they navigate societal complexities and dream of a brighter future.

The book was also adapted into a film in 1983, which included Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe and Patrick Swayze in the cast.

Jolie, lead producer of the musical, expressed her deep connection with the cast and crew.

“It’s been a pleasure because it’s a great, great group of people who brought a lot of heart into a piece that has been around a long time for a reason. And I think it brings out – what I think it’ll bring out for the audience is what it’s brought out in a lot of us,” said Jolie.

The play’s director Dayna Taymor spoke highly of Vivienne’s contribution to the project’s production.

“She’s so observant. I’ve asked her to give notes every night when she watches the show, and her notes are amazing. They’re like the things she catches and the way she’s watching is beautiful,” said Taymor.

The opening night saw more than just the premiere of a new musical – it was also the unveiling of a surprise tattoo on the show’s writer and composer, Justin Levine, apparently at the urging of Jolie.

“She made me do something. Can I show? I’m gonna show – Angie made me do this. Never done it before in my life,” the writer shared, revealing a tattoo by renowned artist Mark Mahoney.

Jolie added: “We got initiated.”

In addition to her role as producer, Jolie extended her creativity to the some of the red carpet looks worn by the cast.

The show is playing at the Jacobs Theater in New York.
