Benedict Cumberbatch premieres Netflix show ‘Eric’ in London

LONDON: Actor Benedict Cumberbatch led the cast and crew on the red carpet for the premiere of the new Netflix thriller series “Eric” on Monday (May 20).
The six-part limited series is based in 1980s New York and tells the story of Vincent (Cumberbatch), a leading puppeteer and creator of a popular children’s puppet show, whose son, Edgar, goes missing on the way to school.

With his mental health deteriorating, Vincent convinces himself that featuring on his TV show Eric, the blue puppet Edgar drew, is the key to bringing his nine-year-old home.
When asked what message the audience should take away from the show, writer Abi Morgan said, “I hope that they see that history repeats itself unless we listen and learn, and that the notion of what it means to be a parent, not just in the minor way, as in within the family unit, but in a major way to be part of society.”
“And really, about those lost children and why they fall through the cracks because of cultural, economic, social prejudices. I wanted to examine this moment in history and realise that it has resonance in the 21st century,” she added.

Among the cast and crew in attendance was actors McKinley Belcher lll, Gabby Hoffmann and Ivan Howe.
“Eric” will air on Netflix on May 30.
