WEB DESK: During Eidul Azha, indulging in a variety of mouth-watering dishes such as paye, karahis, kebabs, and biryani that feature red meat is a tradition. However, recent research points out the potential health risks associated with overconsumption of red meat, particularly within a single day.
Excessive red meat intake poses a significant concern due to its high saturated fat content, found mainly in fatty cuts of beef and lamb. The high fat content can heavily elevate levels of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) cholesterol in the bloodstream.

Elevated LDL cholesterol poses a significant risk factor for cardiovascular diseases like heart attacks and strokes. Overconsumption of red meat, particularly fatty varieties, heightens susceptibility to these serious health conditions.
Red meat also serves as a substantial source of heme iron, which the body absorbs more readily than non-heme iron found in plant-based foods. While essential for oxygen transport, excessive heme iron intake can lead to oxidative stress. The oxidative stress has the potential to harm cells and tissues, contributing to chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular disease and cancer.
Studies have established a link between the consumption of processed red meats and an increased risk of certain cancers, notably colorectal cancer. The chemicals utilised in processing can generate potentially carcinogenic compounds within the digestive system.
Frequent consumption of red meat has also been associated with a heightened likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes. Researchers propose that compounds inherent to red meat, such as heme iron and specific amino acids, may foster insulin resistance and disrupt glucose metabolism over time.
