LHC issues environmental directives to tackle smog issues

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has issued a series of landmark directives aimed at tackling the region’s persistent smog and addressing pressing environmental concerns. These orders not only aim to improve air quality but also promote responsible urban development and conservation efforts.
In a bid to combat the annual smog crisis that engulfs the region, the LHC has issued writ petitions mandating measures for smog remediation. These directives come as a response to the hazardous levels of air pollution witnessed in recent years.
Supreme Court to resume Practice and Procedure Act case today
Among the notable orders, the court has mandated a fine of Rs 2,000 for individuals across Punjab who fail to wear helmets while riding motorcycles. The implementation of this directive is expected to enhance road safety and reduce the risk of accidents.
Furthermore, a fine of Rs 5,000 has been imposed on individuals who engage in car washing activities at their homes. The court’s aim is to conserve water resources while also reducing the release of detergents into the environment.
LHC has also issued strict monitoring instructions for the Dolphin Police force, aiming to enhance the efficiency and transparency of the law enforcement agency.
In a bid to promote greenery and combat urban sprawl, the court has ordered a fine of Rs 5,000 for those who park their vehicles on green belts. Additionally, the court has called for the planting of more Miyawaki forests in Lahore to boost the city’s green cover.
The court has mandated that the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) will require judicial permission to initiate any future projects, emphasizing a more cautious and environmentally responsible approach to urban development. The LDA has also been directed to seek instructions from the environment department regarding their development projects.
Karachi’s special courts notified as NAB courts
The court has taken a strong stance on controlling air pollution from brick kilns, instructing concerned officers to take action against kilns emitting black smoke. Failure to take action against these kilns may result in criminal proceedings.
Furthermore, the LHC has called for steps to preserve old trees, recognizing the significance of maintaining green heritage within the city.
