RAWALPINDI: In a remarkable feat of billing, a resident of Dhamial, Rawalpindi district, was slapped with a gas bill totalling Rs12.3 million!

Raja Allah Ditta, a man simply trying to keep the food in his home warm, now faces a bill that could finance a small nation.

The aptly named Allah Ditta isn’t exactly swimming in ready money. The shocked man made his way to our well-functioning, always-on-top Sui Gas office, eyes glazed in disbelief and a hint of desperation.

“I am a poor man”, Allah Ditta lamented in a video that has since gone viral. “How will I pay a gas bill of Rs12.3 million?”

One can only imagine the shock on his face when he beheld the bill. It’s the kind of surprise that could make even the calmest of monks question their existence.

The Rawalpindi Sui Gas department, like a scorned muse, sent Allah Ditta the astronomical bill after he failed to pay his regular bills for four months.

Apparently, they decided to make up for lost time by applying ‘exponential interest’, coupled with a small margin for profit – payment for their patience, mayhaps.

“You owe us for four months, so here’s a bill that’s more than most people earn in a lifetime”, seems to be the thought process behind the Big Brained Decision.

When the poor man approached the Sui Gas office to voice his concerns, he was met with world’s finest customer service treatment. “Pay the bill at all costs”, was the concise, direct—and rather unhelpful— sage advice.

Maybe they thought he has to cover the cost of a luxury yacht or two than few months of gas. After all, what’s a few millions when you are floating in luxury.

A spokesperson for the Sui Northern Gas company acknowledged the situation, stating that the matter has come to their attention—y’know, the very department issuing the bill!

“We’re investigating”, the spokesperson said rather helpfully; even suggesting that the bill might be a “computer error”. An astute observation indeed!

Allah Ditta’s predicament, handed more than he can bear, brought an outpouring of sympathy across social media. Many shared their own horror stories in a country where we might soon be taxed for breathing the very air!
