WEB DESK: In the modern era where everywhere is either hunched over their computer or cellular screens, several degenerative diseases such as cervical spondylosis has seen an uptick in people as young as 22!
Research shows that maintaining a proper posture and alignment of the spine with body is important for both, our physical and mental health.

In one such study published by the “Applied Ergonomics”, poor posture can cause various musculoskeletal issues, including neck pain, back pain, and even headache.
The reason behind such body aches is slouching or slumping places increased risk and stress on the spine and the surrounding muscles and ligaments.
Over time, this can result in inflammation, muscle imbalances, and even structural changes to the spine!
Meanwhile, practicing good posture, where your ears, shoulders and hips are aligned vertically, can help reduce the physical strain on the body. Proper posture allows a body’s muscles and joints to work properly, helping to reduce strain and pain.
Interestingly, benefits of a good posture extend beyond just physical health. A study published in the journal “Health Psychology” found that people who were instructed to sit up straight during a stressful task reported lower levels of fear, better self-esteem and greater feelings of power compared to those who were told to slouch.
The researchers believe this is because a proper posture can influence our neurological and hormonal systems, impacting our mood and how we view ourselves.
Of course, maintaining good posture takes conscious effort, especially in our technology-driver world. Researchers recommend setting reminders to check in on one’s posture throughout the day.
One can also incorporate postural exercises into their daily routine. Simple stretches and strengthening moves that target the core, back and shoulder muscles can go a long way in supporting proper alignment.
By making one’s posture a priority, we can not only reduce the risk of degenerative diseases, but also improve our overall well-being and self-confidence.
