ISLAMABAD: The bohemian maxi skirt, quintessential to 1970s fashion, made a global comeback in this summer’s fashion scene.
According to magazines Vogue and Glamour, fatigue from the runaway’s fixation on mini and micro skirts has everyone running in the opposite direction.
“Practical and lightweight, it’s won over the hearts of all the biggest stars,” claims Vogue.
The maxi skirt is breezy and spacious, perfect to combat the summer heat. Fashion outlets are seeing it as a rebirth of a timeless icon, a wardrobe staple.
“The maxi skirt of 2023 is all about adding a touch of romance and comfort,” Vogue said.
The style of skirt originated in the 1960s as part of London’s Mod subculture. Their wardrobe was made up of loud patterns and long hemlines. London women later reworked these into more modest versions, often in check and stripe patterns, and a trapeze cut.
It was then in the 1970s that the maxi skirt truly took off. Influenced by the hippie movement of the seventies, the new aesthetic rebelled against ‘sophisticated clothing . Rather, it focused on fashion as an expression of freedom, a notion embodied by the loose maxi.
Increasingly lightweight fabrics such as cotton, muslin, linen were used. Floral prints and pastels prevailed.
Various celebrities have been embracing the maxi this summer, from Kendell Jenner sporting a high-low look paired with trainers, to Katie holmes rocking it in a breezy white, styled with casual loafers and a jumper.
