The night is often referred to as the “Night of the Destiny”, the “Night of Decree”, or the “Night of Determination”. It is considered to be “better than a thousand months”, as stated in the Holy Quran.
Muslims around the world engage in heightened devotions during the last ten days of Ramadan, particularly on the odd-numbered nights; these include the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th and the 29th. The significance of Laylat al-Qadr can be understood by the belied that during the night, the angels descend to the earth and Allah’s mercy and blessings are abundant.
It is a time for prayer, reflection and seeking forgiveness, as the Prophet Muhammad emphasised the importance of seeking this night through acts of worship.
On the 21st night of Ramadan, Muslims are encouraged to engage in Tahajjud prayers, recite the Holy Quran and offer dua. The night is also an opportunity for spiritual retreat (Itikaf), where Muslims dedicate themselves to worship and reflection.
Prayers offered during this night are believed to carry immense rewards, with the promise that sincere acts of worship can lead to the forgiveness of past sins.
Communal prayers and gatherings are often organised in mosques and community centre, fostering a sense of unity. Special prayers, such as the Iftitah and al-Jawshan al-Kabir are recited. Many Muslims take the opportunity to offer saqdah to those in need, as well.
