23rd SCO Heads of State Council Meeting kicks off in Islamabad


ISLAMABAD

Strict security measures in place; main roads in the city closed

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is hosting the 23rd SCO Heads of State Council Meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) today. In honour of the visiting dignitaries, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will also host a formal dinner later this evening.

The Foreign Office has released detailed information regarding the meeting. The official opening of the SCO Summit will take place tomorrow (October 16) at the Jinnah Convention Center, where all foreign heads of government and their delegations will convene. PM Sharif will personally welcome the guests upon their arrival, followed by a reception and group photo session to mark the occasion.

The summit will then formally commence with an opening address delivered by the premier, setting the tone for the discussions that will follow. After his speech, heads of the foreign delegations will take turns addressing the conference, focusing on the key topics outlined in the agenda.

Once the addresses are completed, important documents will be signed to formalise agreements and initiatives among the member states. The conference will conclude with remarks from PM Sharif, wrapping up the agenda.

Following the formal proceedings, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and the Secretary-General of the SCO Ambassador Zhang Ming will address the media to provide insights into the outcomes of the summit. Tomorrow, PM Sharif will also host a luncheon for the participants.

Meanwhile, stringent security arrangements have been made for the SCO conference in Islamabad. All roads connected to the red zone are closed, Islamabad Traffic Police spokesman said.

Park Road, Bani Gala, and Rawal Dam Chowk are closed from Club Road. Faisal Avenue is closed at Faizabad. Roads from IJP Road to I-8 are also closed. Likewise, the road leading to the convention center on Srinagar highway is also closed, traffic police said.
