ISLAMABAD: Inspector General of Islamabad Police, Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, described today as a tragic day for the force, following the martyrdom of officer Abdul Hameed Shah during violent protests in the capital.

“The young man whose duty was to fight robbers lost his life today at the hands of violent protesters,” IG Rizvi said. Constable Hameed was critically injured after being struck by stones hurled by protesters and later succumbed to his injuries.

IG Rizvi highlighted the sorrow felt by Constable Hameed’s family, particularly his children, who are now seeking justice. “FIRs are being registered against those responsible for his martyrdom,” the IG assured, promising that severe legal action would follow.

The protests, led by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur saw confrontations at various entry points to Islamabad, including Chungi No. 26 and D-Chowk. Protesters attempted to storm the capital, leading to clashes with police forces. “This was not a mere protest, but an orchestrated attack,” IG Rizvi remarked, emphasising that Islamabad Police, with the support of Rangers and Punjab Police, thwarted all sabotage attempts.

As of today, 878 individuals have been arrested, including 120 Afghan citizens who face charges under the Foreign National Act. “We have registered 10 FIRs in eight police stations, incorporating provisions under terrorism laws, including Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA),” the IG revealed.

The violence resulted in extensive damage to police and government property. “Protesters vandalised 31 motorcycles, three private vehicles, and destroyed traffic signals. Our personnel were targeted, and bullet marks were found on their bulletproof vests,” Rizvi added.

In total, one officer was martyred and 31 others injured.

The IG also noted that resources and personnel from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and police were involved in the unrest. “Weapons, tear gas shells, batons, and face masks belonging to the KP police were used in the demonstration. Taking the law into one’s own hands will not be tolerated,” IG Rizvi said.

Investigations are ongoing, with the assistance of Safe City cameras, and the IG vowed to ensure justice for the slain officer.
