Afghanistan confirms TTP arrests, credits Pakistan for intel sharing

Afghanistan confirms TTP arrests

KABUL: In a significant development, Afghan media reported the admission by the Ministry of Interior of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan that approximately 40 members of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have been apprehended across the country over the past year.

Spokesperson Abdul Mateen Qani stated, “We have a large number of ISIS prisoners, and about 35 to 40 TTP terrorists are in our custody,” marking the first public acknowledgment of such arrests by Afghan authorities.

The successful capture of these TTP operatives was reportedly facilitated by intelligence shared by Pakistan, revealing the clandestine locations of the terrorists, as disclosed by Tulu News.

This revelation comes in the wake of a recent demand from Pakistan’s foreign office, urging the interim Afghan government to take decisive action against militants operating within its borders.

The statement emphasised Afghanistan’s responsibility to prevent the use of its territory for terrorism against Pakistan. “Afghanistan shall take all necessary measures to prevent the continued use of Afghan territory for terrorism against Pakistan,” stated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan.

In response, Afghanistan reiterated its commitment to addressing the issue promptly, promising immediate action if any evidence regarding the presence of TTP elements is found, according to Afghan media.

The impact of these arrests on Afghanistan-Pakistan relations remains uncertain. Experts suggest that if Afghanistan effectively addresses the problem, there is potential for an improvement in relations between the two neighboring countries.
