ISLAMABAD: The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has taken the lead in the by-polls held on nearly two dozen national and provincial seats on Sunday, as per unofficial and preliminary results.

According to the unofficial and preliminary results, PML-N won both national assembly seats from Lahore and Kasur while PPP won the NA seat from Sindh’s Qambar Shadadkot. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-backed Sunni Ittehad Council failed to win anything from Punjab but won one national assembly seat from KPK while the other seat went to an independent candidate.

PML-N along with IPP and PML-Q won 11 seats from the Punjab assembly while PPP won one seat from Rahim Yar Khan. PML-N also won one provincial assembly seat from Balochistan.

SIC won one KP assembly seat while the second went to the independent candidate. In Balochistan, the BNP was victorious on one seat while the result from Qila Abdullah was still to come.  

In a major blow to PTI, its president and SIC’s candidate Parvez Ealhi faced a humiliating defeat at the hands of his nephew and PML-Q’s Musa Elahi who won by taking 71357 from Gujrat against Ch Parvez 37106 votes while his son Moonis Elahi also lost the election in Lahore.

Following the swearing-in of the new assemblies, Pakistan’s first by-elections on 21 vacant national and provincial assembly seats were held amid sporadic incidents of clashes between workers of different political parties in Punjab.

Major political parties including PML-N, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed Sunni Ittehad Council and PPP participated in the by-polls.

The voting on the by-polls, conducted after the February 8 general elections, started at 8am and concluded at 5pm today.

During the polling process, the federal government suspended mobile phone services temporarily in several districts of Punjab and Balochistan in a decision that was taken to safeguard the integrity and security of the electoral process.

PM CONGRATULATES ELECTED MNAS, MPAS IN BY-POLLS

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has congratulated the newly elected members of the national and provincial assemblies in the by-elections.

In a statement, he said the victory of the newly elected members of PML-N is a reflection of trust of people in the party.

The Prime Minister thanked the people for voting for PML-N and assured that every effort would be made to serve the people.

He said the success of the candidates of PML-N is a recognition of the revival of economy, decrease in inflation and improvement in foreign affairs by the government.

Shehbaz Sharif said the public opinion is changing prominently with economic improvement and relief to the people.

He said the predictions of international financial institutions, news organizations and surveys about economic improvement have a positive effect on the people.

He said the weaknesses in electoral process and objections can be removed only with mutual cooperation and political dialogue.
