Chief Justice leads meetings on judicial commission, prison reforms

LAHORE: Chief Justice Yahya Afridi led a meeting on the judicial commission, marking the first gathering since the passage of the 26th constitutional amendment and the reorganisation of the commission.
The meeting addressed the constitution of the constitutional benches and the establishment of the commission’s secretariat.
The 26th constitutional amendment was passed in October 2024, and introduced a huge changes to the country’s judiciary. It modified the judicial appointments and the oversight of the judiciary.
Meanwhile, in a separate meeting focused on prison reforms, Chief Justice Yahya Afridi chaired a session in Lahore. It was attended by Chief Justice of Lahore High Court, Alia Neelum and the Administrative Judge of the Prosecution Departments, the Inspector General of Police and the Inspector General of Prisons.

The Registrar of the Supreme Court, Senator Ahad Cheema and Khadija Shah also attended the meeting.
The primary objective was to formulate a national prison reform policy aimed at improving conditions within the prison system and improving the welfare of the prisoners.
Pakistani prisons have long been criticised for overcrowding, inadequate medical care, and insufficient rehabilitation programmes.
