Nawaz Sharif and US Envoy discuss bilateral ties, election preparedness

LAHORE: PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif engaged in a significant meeting with US Ambassador Donald Blome in Lahore, addressing the prevailing political and economic climate in Pakistan and particularly focusing on his party’s preparations for the upcoming elections.

This interaction is part of Blome’s series of discussions with various politicians as the election season gains momentum, including the PPP’s Yusuf Raza Gilani and Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party (IPP) chief Jahangir Tareen.

The meeting coincided with Nawaz’s series of public gatherings leading up to next year’s elections since his return to the country on October 21.

The PML-N statement outlined that discussions between the two leaders underscored the importance of Pakistan’s relations with the United States.

Nawaz expressed his perspectives on the political and economic situation in Pakistan, specifically addressing his party’s preparedness for the upcoming elections.

He conveyed to the US envoy the expectation that the people of Pakistan would once again trust the PML-N to navigate the country through its current challenges.

The leaders delved into bilateral ties, mutual multilateral concerns, and the significance of a steadfast partnership between the US and Pakistan.

They stressed exploring opportunities for enhanced cooperation in various domains, including trade, economy, climate change, security, and regional stability.

Notably, Nawaz raised concerns about the plight of innocent Palestinians facing indiscriminate Israeli bombardment and urged an immediate end to hostilities, emphasising the need for humanitarian and medical assistance.

The US Embassy’s statement highlighted Ambassador Blome’s engagements with political actors in Multan and Lahore, discussing the importance of free, fair elections and the US-Pakistan trade and investment relationship.
