ISLAMABAD: The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) announced on Sunday the recall of a medication intended for the treatment of iron deficiency. The action follows the declaration by the Central Drugs Laboratory (CDL) in Karachi that a specific batch of the drug is substandard.

The recall targets Novarise Syrup 50mg/5ml, produced by Sharooq Pharmaceuticals (Pvt.) Ltd in Lahore. The CDL identified an excessive concentration of Ethylene Glycol in the syrup, a toxic compound with potential harmful effects.
Batch No. 113 of Novarise Syrup was found to contain 0.78 per cent Ethylene Glycol, surpassing the acceptable limit. Consequently, DRAP has prohibited the distribution, sale, and use of this batch, emphasising its potential health risks.
This recall is part of a broader action by DRAP, which recently withdrew 11 substandard medicines from the market and initiated proceedings against the responsible pharmaceutical companies.
