Drug tests to be conducted in Sindh educational institutes

KARACHI: Sindh government in collaboration with federal and provincial anti-narcotics agencies will conduct drug tests on children in educational institutions.

This measure has been taken to combat the rising menace of drugs and substance use amongst the youth.

Provincial information minister Sharjeel Memon said , “Only the parents would be informed in case of a positive test result” .

“The child will then be asked about the source of the drugs and the arrest of drug suppliers, dealers, and their facilitators will be the top priority.”

President Asif Ali Zardari issued directives to eradicate the menace of narcotics after assuming the office, Memon said and added the president was “deeply concerned” about the rising trend of drug abuse.

According to the information minister, the parents and school administrations would be taken into confidence.

According to Secretary Education Zahid Ali Abbasi the administration of 11,000 registered private schools in the province has assured full cooperation on prevention of drug use and drug testing of students and takes the Parents Teachers Association into confidence on the issue.
