LAHORE: The Punjab government has announced early summer vacations for schools across the province due to the ongoing heatwave.

According to a statement by Punjab Education Minister Raja Sikandar Hayat on social media, all public and private schools will begin summer break from May 28 (Wednesday).

The date also coincides with a public holiday already declared in the province.

As per the new schedule, the summer holidays will start from May 28 and continue till August 9, 2025. A formal notification is yet to be issued.

The decision comes after repeated requests from parents urging authorities to announce summer vacations in Punjab schools amid soaring temperatures.

Meanwhile, revised school timings have been issued. Schools will now operate from 7:30 am to 11:30 am until the start of the holidays.

Earlier the Punjab School Education Department has sent a summary to the Chief Minister, seeking approval to start summer holidays from June 1, as per the annual academic calendar.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has sounded the alarm over soaring temperatures, warning of a possible heatwave from May 20 to May 24.

Relief Commissioner Punjab Nabeel Javed confirmed that alerts have been issued to key departments, including school education, health, transport, local government, and Rescue 1122, instructing them to stay prepared.

According to a PDMA spokesperson, major cities and plain areas across Punjab are likely to experience extreme heat during the forecast period. Authorities have been asked to take precautionary measures to protect public health and safety.
