ISLAMABAD: Election Commission of Pakistan has sought details of assets of Ahad Cheema, adviser to Prime Minister Anwar ul Haq Kakar.
In a pointed circular directed to the secretary of the cabinet division, the ECP has raised questions about the conspicuous absence of asset declarations from Ahad Cheema, a discrepancy deemed to be in violation of section 230(3) of the Election Act 2017.
The circular underscores the legal obligation placed on high-ranking officials, such as the Prime Minister, Chief Minister, Minister, or any member of the caretaker government, to transparently disclose their assets. This requirement extends beyond the individual to encompass the assets of their spouse and children.
With a deadline set for December 18, the Election Commission has firmly directed Ahad Cheema to furnish comprehensive details regarding his assets, as well as those of his immediate family members. The urgency of this request is emphasized in the circular, which notes that this information is mandatory under the legal framework.
Notably, this isn’t the first time the Election Commission has pressed Ahad Cheema on this matter. Previous attempts to obtain asset disclosures went unanswered, prompting the Commission to issue a subsequent communication to the Cabinet Division, reinforcing the need for compliance with the legal provisions governing asset declarations. As the deadline approaches, all eyes are on Ahad Cheema’s response to the Election Commission’s renewed call for transparency.
