ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has requested a detailed report from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) regarding internet connectivity issues at Adiala Jail.

The ECP has requested the report due to former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan’s failure to appear via video link during a contempt hearing. The case, involving contempt charges against the Imran Khan, was heard at the ECP.
Jail officials informed the commission that internet services at Adiala Jail were not functioning properly, hindering Imran Khan’s participation in the proceedings. PTI’s legal representative, Shoaib Shaheen, also raised concerns about the unreliable internet and the restriction on meeting his client, stating that proper communication is crucial for legal consultation.
The ECP members clarified that they do not have the jurisdiction to address the detention conditions of the former premier, or facilitate meetings between him and his legal team. Their role, they emphasised, is limited to proceeding with the contempt charges.

Shaheen argued that the legal team has the right to seek instructions from their client, underscoring the importance of resolving the technical issues to ensure a fair legal process. The ECP awaits the PTA’s report to determine the next course of action.
