Fresh alert issued for heavy rains, hailstorm in Islamabad

alert issued for hailstorm in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority’s (NDMA) National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) has forecast more heavy rains, thunderstorms, windstorms, and isolated hailstorms on Friday and Saturday evenings in various parts of the country, including Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

The latest advisory comes a day after a fierce hailstorm and rain lashed Islamabad and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), smashing car windshields, damaging solar panels, and breaking trees.

According to the alert, the Pothohar region, including Rawalpindi and Islamabad, along with upper and central Punjab, could face severe weather conditions from the evening of April 18 to April 19. The stormy weather may impact infrastructure, disrupt travel, and harm agricultural activity.

Strong winds and downpours may lead to power outages, fallen trees, and road blockages. Vulnerable structures, rooftops, and power lines are also at risk. Hailstorms could particularly damage crops and glass-based installations. Reduced visibility may increase the chances of road accidents.

The NEOC has advised citizens to secure loose items, avoid sheltering under trees or weak structures, and limit unnecessary travel. Travellers are urged to confirm road conditions beforehand and avoid non-essential trips.

Those living near landslide-prone areas have been asked to remain vigilant and follow all local safety instructions. Residents are also encouraged to stay updated via the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert app and rely only on official sources for weather information.

This advisory follows an earlier NEOC alert predicting severe weather across Punjab, including districts like Attock, Chakwal, Gujrat, Jhelum, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Hafizabad, and Lahore. The warning also highlighted risks to crops and urged farmers to take protective steps.

Together, both alerts underscore the seriousness of the upcoming weather and aim to ensure public safety across Punjab and adjoining regions.
