Govt hikes electricity price by Rs1.74 per unit

electricity consumption in winter

ISLAMABAD: The government has increased the electricity tariff by Rs1.74 per unit through a quarterly adjustment, according to a new notification.

The price hike will apply to consumers across the country, including those served by K-Electric and DISCOs (distribution companies).

The increase, which is expected to generate over Rs43 billion in additional revenue from consumers, will be effective for the months of September, October and November.

Earlier, on September 6, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority sent its decision on the quarterly adjustment to the federal government for approval.

Meanwhile, the Punjab government has revoked its Rs14 per unit electricity subsidy for consumers of Islamabad after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) raised an objection to the subsidy. However, consumers in Punjab will continue to benefit from the subsidy until September 30. Consumers using less than 500 units in August had benefited from the subsidized bills.
