Imaan Mazari, Ali Wazir remanded into police custody

ISLAMABAD: Human rights activist and lawyer Imaan Mazari and Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) leader Ali Wazir were remanded into police custody by a local court in the federal capital on Sunday on charges related to “interference in state affairs.”

The arrests were executed separately by Islamabad police during the early hours of Sunday, under allegations of meddling in state matters. Both Imaan and Wazir have been charged individually under the Anti-Terrorism Act, and today they were produced before Duty Judicial Magistrate Ehtisham Alam Khan.

During the proceedings, the police sought physical remand for both detainees. The court granted one-day police custody for Imaan and two days for Wazir.

Additionally, Imaan’s legal representative filed a petition for the return of her confiscated mobile phone and personal belongings.

In response to this plea, the court demanded a report from the Tarnol Police’s Station House Officer (SHO) regarding the seized belongings.

Simultaneously, the court ordered to keep Imaan at the women’s police station in relation to the terrorism case.

Furthermore, the court instructed the police to present Imaan before an anti-terrorism court tomorrow, which will subsequently determine her physical remand status concerning the terrorism case.

Following the arrests, the Islamabad Police took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to convey: “Both the accused were wanted by the Islamabad Police for investigation. All actions will be taken in accordance with the law.”

Meanwhile, Shireen Mazari, Imaan’s mother and a former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader, addressed journalists at the Islamabad district court.

She revealed that individuals in plainclothes confined their guard in the guardroom before forcibly entering their residence. Shireen Mazari detailed how around 20 individuals, including six female police officers, participated in the operation, which also extended to her room, resulting in the seizure of her phone.
