Imran Khan detained again shortly after release in Rawalpindi

The founder of PTI, Imran Khan, was detained by the police in Rawalpindi, hours after being released on bail on Thursday.

RAWALPINDI: The founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, was arrested by the police in Rawalpindi, hours after being released on bail on Thursday.

The former Prime Minister was arrested in connection to a new case filed at the New Town police station. Imran Khan had only been released less than a day after a bail approval in the Toshakhana case on Wednesday.

The new charges against the former PM include arson, resisting law enforcement and property damage; anti-terrorism provisions were also reportedly incorporated into the case.

A police spokesperson confirmed that an investigation team, led by the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Investigation, was currently questioning Imran Khan.

The PTI founder is scheduled to appear in court on Friday (tomorrow) to seek physical remand.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) granted Imran bail in the Toshakhana case. It required him to submit two surety bonds of Rs1 million each.

The court also ordered his release after the bonds were posted.

Previously, the former PM and First Lady had their requests for acquittal in the same case denied by the Special Central Judge, Shah Rukh Arjumand.

Meanwhile, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) appealed to the Supreme Court to contest Bushra Bibi’s bail in the Toshakhana case.

The FIA claims that the bail was granted in violation of the SC protocols and alleges that Bushra Bibi was complicit in the case alongside her husband.

Earlier, on July 13, Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were arrested in a separate reference by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) concerning Toshakhana, shortly after their acquittal in the Iddat case.

The arrest followed the acceptance of their appeals against the conviction in the Iddat case by the Islamabad district and sessions court.

Khan’s latest arrest took him back to the notorious jail, Adiala Jail, where he is currently being held. The charges filed against him at the New Town police station relate to his alleged participation in a violent protest on May 9 last year.
