ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) has approved for hearing a petition filed by the PTI founder Imran Khan seeking a judicial probe into the events of May 9.
Advocate Hamid Khan appeared on behalf of the PTI founder, arguing that despite 18 months passing, the truth about the incidents of May 9 remains unclear. He said that a single political party is being sidelined and numerous cases have been filed in connection to the May 9 events.
Justice Mandokhail asked why the petitioner had not approached the high court. In response, Hamid Khan stated that the matter concerns the entire country, not just a single province, which is why the Supreme Court was approached.
The advocate further noted that the registrar’s office had raised objections, claiming it was not a matter of public interest.

Justice Aminuddin Khan asked the advocate to provide concrete reasons to justify the petition.
Justice Aminuddin remarked that, at first glance, the registrar’s objections appeared valid. Advocate Hamid Khan requested the court to remove the objections, assuring he would satisfy the court on the merits of the case.
The apex court overruled the registrar’s office’s objections and directed it to assign a case number and schedule the hearing.
It merits mentioning that one of the former prime minister’s demands was setting up a judicial commission to probe the events on May 9.
Riots had erupted across the country following the arrest of the ex-premier on May 9, 2023 from the Islamabad High Court’s premises.
