ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif has come under scrutiny over claims of using ChatGPT to write a tweet praising Pakistan’s national hockey team.
The PM, known for tweeting in multiple languages, congratulated the team on their semi-final win over France in the FIH Nations Cup. “Heartfelt congratulations to the national hockey team for reaching the final of the Nations Cup. Pakistani team turned the tide of the match with courage, skill, and determination—this is a proud moment for the entire nation. Pakistan Zindabad!” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
The tweet has given rise to a debate, some users pointed out that the use of em dash (—) in the tweet indicates that it was AI generated.
While some defended the PM. “The em dash has existed in English long before AI—this is a non-issue,” one user posted. Another remarked, “Even if it was written with AI, what’s the harm? People use calculators and spellcheck too.”
Globally, the use of AI tools in political messaging has stirred debate, as experts begin identifying patterns linked to machine-generated language.
Others laughed off the controversy. “People use ChatGPT to write entire theses. This was just a tweet,” a comment read.
So far, the PM office has not commented on whether the tweet was AI generated or not.
