Islamabad roads deserted amid PTI protest convoy movement

Islamabad roads

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad witnessed an eerie calm early Monday morning as main roads remained blocked, public transport was suspended and educational institutes closed.

Life for residents of the capital city has come to a standstill due to heightened security measures ahead of a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest convoy making it way into Islamabad.

Imran Khan issued a “final call” for nationwide protests on Sunday against the arrest of his party workers, the passage of the 26th amendment, and for an independent judiciary.

All educational institutions in the twin cities remained closed for the day, and most offices shifted to remote work. Embassies in the capital were also reportedly closed as a precautionary measure.

The Metro Bus service and other forms of public transport were suspended, leaving citizens stranded and struggling to move about.

Traffic flow resumed at several key interchanges in Islamabad, including Zero Point, Faizabad, and Koral. However, obstacles remain in some areas.

Containers have been placed on the route from Zero Point Interchange to Srinagar Highway, restricting movement. T-Chowk in Rawat is partially open for traffic, allowing limited access.

PTI’s main convoy zeroes in on Islamabad amid tightened security, roadblocks

Several routes connecting Rawalpindi to Islamabad continue to face disruptions due to roadblocks.

Mobile phone and internet services were also shut down, adding to the woes of residents.

Authorities deployed heavy contingents of police and Rangers to maintain order and prevent any untoward incidents.

Authorities have advised citizens to remain indoors until the situation normalizes. However, no timeline has been provided for the restoration of transport and communication services.
