Kite flying becomes non-bailable offence in Punjab

LAHORE: A complete ban has been imposed on kite flying in Punjab, and violators will face jail time and heavy penalties.

According to a Home Ministry spokesperson, the Punjab Assembly has recently passed the Amended Kite Flying Prohibition Act 2024 under which kite flying has been declared a nonbailable offense

Violators will face a minimum of three years to a maximum of seven years’ imprisonment. A fine ranging from Rs. 500,000 to Rs. 5 million will be imposed for kite flying, manufacturing, selling, or transporting related materials, the spokesman said.

The ban applies to kites, metallic wires, nylon strings, and all sharp threads, including those used for kite flying.

The manufacturing and transportation of materials related to kite flying are completely prohibited.

Anyone caught flying a kite will face three to five years’ imprisonment, a Rs. 2 million fine, or both while kite manufacturers and transporters will face five to seven years’ imprisonment, a Rs. 5 million fine, or both, the spokesperson warned

Children involved in kite flying will be fined Rs. 50,000 for the first offence and Rs. 100,000 for the second offence, the spokesman said.

These measures are expected to deter individuals from participating in this deadly activity.
