Lahore faces more load-shedding amid power crisis

LAHORE: The Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) on Tuesday announced that it would impose further two-hour load-shedding on its consumers due to a severe electricity shortfall of almost 300 megawatts (MW).

The company said that it was receiving only 2100 MW from the national grid, while the total electricity demand for Lahore was 2400 MW.

The city has been suffering from almost six hours of power outages daily since December 2023, as the country faces a chronic power crisis caused by low water levels in reservoirs that affect electricity generation.

LESCO cracks down on power theft

In a related development, the LESCO said that it had detected 429 cases of power theft in Lahore, Nankana Sahib, Kasur, Sheikhupura and Okara districts.

Sources said that the company had filed first information reports (FIRs) against the culprits and arrested 22 of them so far.

The sources added that the LESCO had disconnected eight commercial, one agricultural and more than 400 domestic connections of the power thieves, who had been fined Rs13.784 million for stealing a total of 349,124 units of electricity.
