Lahore gets first opera music academy

LAHORE: Federal Minister for National Heritage & Culture, Jamal Shah, inaugurated the country’s first Opera Music Star Saira Arts Academy (SAA) on Saturday, expressing his best wishes and prayers for the fulfilment of the academy’s vision. Shah emphasized the transformative power of music in addressing societal issues.

Speaking to the media, Shah underscored the importance of establishing art institutions for the youth, praising the creation of Saira Arts Academy, a brainchild of Pakistan’s first opera star, Saira Peter. The minister lauded the academy’s role in ushering in a new era for the music industry in the country.

Saira Peter, addressing the media, described the academy as a grassroots initiative by young individuals aiming to provide a secure and nurturing space for emerging artists, particularly talented female singers. She emphasized Lahore’s rich artistic legacy, spanning centuries of musical creation.

Director Saira Peter disclosed that the initiative was prompted by numerous music enthusiasts urging her to establish an academy focused on opera, Western, and Pakistani classical singing. She expressed her commitment to fostering the development of new talent.

In his speech, Prof. Zafar Francis, the founding chair of SAA’s parent organization, The Sarah Foundation, highlighted the scientific and spiritual aspects of music, with a special mention of Sufi music contributing to purity and peace. He articulated that SAA aims to convey Pakistani values to the global stage.

The inauguration marks a significant milestone for the arts and cultural scene in Lahore, promising to cultivate a new generation of musicians and contribute to the enrichment of the nation’s musical heritage.
