LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has intervened in the Punjab government’s plan to distribute electric bikes among students, putting a temporary halt to the initiative until Monday.

Balloting for the distribution of 20,000 e-bikes was scheduled to be held today (Friday).

However, the court’s decision has stopped the distribution of electronic bikes until further judicial review.

The matter arose during a hearing regarding smog case, where the LHC took cognizance of the government’s proposed distribution of electric bikes to students.

Expressing concerns over potential misuse, the court directed the government to refrain from implementing the scheme until further notice.

Justice Shahid Karim, presiding over the hearing, admonished the government, cautioning against the adverse consequences of providing electronic bikes to students. He emphasized the risk of reckless behavior, including one-wheeling, and the potential for students to venture beyond educational premises, particularly female institutions.

In lieu of electric bikes, the court suggested alternative measures, urging the Punjab government to consider providing electronic buses to colleges instead.

Additionally, the court has sought comprehensive details of the project from the government regarding this project.
