ISLAMABAD: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Counterterrorism Department (CTD) said on Tuesday that it had traced the vehicle used by militants in the attack on a security forces camp in Dera Ismail Khan last month, and identified one of the attackers as a member of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

The CTD said that Sifatullah Marwat, who was killed in the attack, had crossed into Afghanistan through the Torkham border on March 3. His cellphone location was tracked in various places, including Peshawar, Jamrud, and North Waziristan, the CTD said, according to a report in The Khoransan Diary, a local digital platform that mainly covers happenings that occur on both sides of Duran Line.

The CTD also said that Marwat’s father had confirmed his affiliation with the Afghan Emirate, and that three SIM cards from different cellular companies were registered in his name.

Three security personnel martyred in DI Khan suicide attack

The attack on the military post in the Daraban area of Dera Ismail Khan on December 12 was claimed by the Tehreek-e-Jihad Pakistan (TJP), a militant group that operates from across the border.

Six militants, including two suicide bombers, used an explosive-laden vehicle and American-made weapons and ammunition to carry out the assault, which killed 23 soldiers.

Pakistan has consistently been blaming the Afghan Taliban government for not taking action against anti-Pakistan militants, who use Afghan soil to launch attacks on Pakistan. Kabul has denied these charges.
