ISLAMABAD: Nine of Pakistan’s 33 airports are inactive, resulting in a loss of millions of rupees for the country, sources reported on Thursday.
The airports include Bannu, Dalbandin, Parachinar, Khuzdar, Rawalakot, Muzaffarabad, and Saidu Sharif. Flights have been suspended at the aforementioned locations, as well as being suspended for several years at the Sehwan Sharif and Sibi airports.
Sources stated that staff are still employed at these locations, and continue to receive salaries which cost the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) millions every month.
A spokesperson for the PAA reported that these locations could still be used for flight diversions. They also stated that any airline could resume flight operations at any time, adding that the PAA ensures flight safety and the continued availability of the national air network across Pakistan.
There are eight international and 25 domestic airports in Pakistan.
