Murree snowfall, emergency measures activated

Murree snowfall

RAWALPINDI: With Murree officially entering its snowfall season from December 2 to March 15, emergency measures have been implemented, including the activation of 19 emergency check posts in the area.

According to the local administration, with expected snowfall in Murree each emergency check post will operate around the clock with officers from 22 institutions working in three shifts.

In view of the tourist season, which normally begins on December 24, aligning with schools’ winter vacations, Rawalpindi Commissioner Aamir Khattak has directed that all safety and security arrangements be finalized by December 10.

The Rawalpindi commissioner has deployed an additional 100 Civil Defence personnel, with the first batch of 16 already on duty.

To ensure smooth traffic flow, 50 additional traffic police officers have been assigned. Key checkposts are set up at locations like Jhika Gali, Guldana, Sunny Bank, Kashmir Point, GPO Chowk, and Barian.

Vehicle entry into Murree will be monitored at Motorway Toll Plaza and GT Road Toll Plaza, redirecting traffic once capacity is reached.

Tourist facility centres will be established at strategic points, including GPO Chowk, Mall Road, Darya Gali, and Lower Topa.

These centres, manned by representatives from relevant institutions, will operate 24/7 to assist visitors.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

The administration has coordinated with the National Highway Authority, Punjab Disaster Management Authority, and Environment Department to handle weather-related challenges. Salt supplies have been distributed for icy roads, and snow-clearing vehicles with three drivers each are ready for continuous operation.

The meteorological department will provide hourly weather updates once the snowfall begins. Facility centres will be equipped with PTCL landlines, mobile phones, heaters, and other essential items.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has sent two trucks loaded with relief supplies, including blankets, shovels, warm clothing, and specialized rescue gear.
