NIH issues dengue advisory, urges preventive measures

Dengue fever virus

WEB DESK: Following the recent spell of rains in the country, the National Institute of Health (NIH) has warned of an increased risk of dengue virus. In its advisory, the NIH has stated that dengue spreads rapidly in warm and humid conditions, posing a threat of rising cases in Punjab, Balochistan, and northern Pakistan.

NIH stressed the need for immediate action, because stagnant water provides a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

According to the NIH, Pakistan reported 28,427 dengue cases in 2024. Hospitals have been instructed to enhance laboratory facilities for dengue diagnosis.

The advisory strongly recommended using only paracetamol for fever treatment and urged preventive measures such as mosquito nets, repellents, and protective clothing. The NIH has also directed authorities to take urgent steps to control the outbreak by spray and fumigation.
