Pakistan calls for UN Security Council reforms on debt crisis

NEW YORK: Pakistan Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Munir Akram, called for huge, critical reforms within the UN Security Council, including on debt crisis.

During her recent address to the global body, Akram talked about the necessity of addressing importance global issues, including the escalating debt crisis, trade imbalances and tax issues.

In his address, the Pakistani representative stated that the UN needed to prioritise finding solutions to the global looming debt crisis, which have been intensified by the economic fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic and rising geopolitical tensions – the Israeli invasion of Gaza and Ukraine-Russia war.

Akram said that the current dynamics of the UNSC must be reformed to mitigate the competitive strategics employed by powerful nations that often marginalise the interests of less influential countries.

“The United Nations must take a leading role in facilitating financial, trade and tax reforms”, Munir Akram said during the session.

He argued that the existing UN system could be improved by adhering to the foundational principals of the UN Charter, and that it was important it be done so.

Akram also called upon the ineffectiveness of the “like-minded groups” within the UN, suggesting a need for revitalisation to properly tackle global issues.

The group is committed to expediting the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which addressed a range of social, economic and environmental issues.

During his UNSC address, Munir Akram expressed alarm over the violations of the UN Charter. He described these violations as huge threats to the UNSC address, and security.

The Pakistani UN representative indemnified geopolitical tensions and unresolved conflicts as major obstacles to global peace.

To further the 2030 Agenda, Akram talked of the necessity of honouring previous agreements. He reiterated that alternations to their commitments would be unacceptable.

He also raised concerns regarding the focus on the additional aspect of the environmental finance as outlined in the Group of Copiers Agreement.

The Pakistani representative to the UN advocated for a balanced approach to all the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
