Pakistan’s cybercrime conviction rate remains alarmingly low at 3pc

ISLAMABAD: Different courts convicted only three per cent of accused in cybercrime cases in the last five years, official documents reveal.

According to the official data shared by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), a total of 5,713 cybercrime cases were presented to courts from 2020 to 2024, while the conviction ratio remained only three per cent in five years.

In the last five years, more than 7,000 accused were arrested for cybercrimes with only 222 of them convicted by different courts.

According to the documents, 73,825 inquiries were registered in five years and the conviction ratio remained only two per cent in 2024. Of the 1,044 registered cases last year, only 24 accused were convicted in 2014.

In 2023, of the 1,375 registered cases, only 92 accused were punished and the ratio remained six per cent.

In 2022, the conviction ratio remained at only three per cent with 48 accused out of 1469 convicted. The FIA cybercrime wing caught 900 suspects in 10,000 inquiries in six months.

In 2021, of 1224 registered cases, only 38 accused were convicted and the conviction ratio remained only three per cent.

In 2020, out of the 601 registered cases, 20 accused were convicted and the conviction ratio remained three per cent.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior has initiated a major inquiry against 95 passport directorate employees for issuing Pakistani passports to foreign nationals.

Passport and immigration officers are being investigated for issuing passports to foreigners. Of these, 41 are employees of the passport offices are under investigation, the Ministry of Interior said on Tuesday.

The Ministry of Interior has started an inquiry on the recommendation of the Passport and Immigration Department, sources said.
